What is Geo-Targeting?

Definition: Geo-targeting is the determination of the geographic location (geo-location) of a Web site visitor.

Geo-targeting can be achieved through a variety of methods. The visitor can volunteer their geo-location information via site registration, online purchasing information, and other methods of submitting your location information.

If the visitor does not voluntarily divulge their geo-information, then the visitor's geolocation can be determined through the visitor's IP address - with varying levels of accuracy (depending on the targeting methods used and the degree of specificity (or granularity) required).

Once the user's geographic location has been determined, the holder of the geo-location information (typically the Web site owner) can implement numerous actions targeted at that user's geographic location. Put simply, you can geographically target audiences online.

GEO

(Geostationary Earth Orbit) A communications satellite in orbit 22,282 miles above the equator. At this orbit, it travels at the same speed as the earth's rotation, thus appearing stationary. GEOs are excellent for TV broadcasting, but produce distracting, half-second delays in interactive voice conversations, because of the long round trip from earth and back. LEOs and MEOs, which are closer to the earth, are being deployed for interactive services.  For more information on GEO and GPS check out the GPS Waypoint Registry.
